I’m so confused.

We took turns showering in his bathroom when we got back to the house, and then he took me down to the kitchen. After he finished putting a load of laundry in the washer, he asked me when the last time I ate a proper meal was. I frowned and told him it was when I had breakfast with him and Easton the other day, and he glared before making us enough food to feed his entire team. I watched him while he cooked, and then we sat side by side at the kitchen island, talking and eating together like it was the most normal thing in the world.

We’re back up in his bedroom now, lying on his bed and watching a movie that I’m not even paying attention to. He’s on his back, and I’m on my side, my leg hooked over his thigh and my cheek on his chest, his knuckles grazing my spine as I brush my fingertips over the waistband of his sweats.

He won’t leave me alone. Not that I want him to, but I’ve been testing him. Every time I try to slip away, he grabs me by my hair and pulls me back, silently telling me he’s not done with me yet.

I smile into his chest every time he does it.

“Why do you keep looking at your watch?” I ask, tipping my chin at the black Rolex on his wrist.

“Hm?”

“You’ve checked it five times in the last two minutes,” I inform him, my face heating with embarrassment when he doesn’t say anything. “Do you…do want me to go?”

Instead of answering me like a decent person would, he rolls over and grabs the brown paper bag on his nightstand. He picked it up from a bakery in town on the way back earlier, but he wouldn’t tell me what was in it when I asked.

He pulls out two cupcakes topped with vanilla frosting and rainbow sprinkles—mine and Katy’s favorite—and my mouth parts as he passes me one. When he takes out two silver candles, I grab his wrist and check his watch, my throat damn near closing up on me when I realize it’s almost midnight.

There’s no way…

“Nate, what are you…” I trail off, closing my mouth when he pulls me up and sits in front of me.

We’re facing each other on the bed, both cross-legged with our knees touching as he pops a candle in each cake. He smiles as he steals the lighter from my pocket, but it’s not his usual smile. He’s not teasing or making fun of me, he’s just smiling, a little shyly, I think, and it’s making me want to bawl my eyes out.

“How do you know about this?” I whisper, unable to speak properly as he lights the candles.

“She told me things too, party boy,” he answers. “You were all she fuckin’ talked about most of the time.”

I let out a noise that sounds more like a sob than a laugh, my eyes glistening with tears as we wait for the seconds to tick by on his watch.
